SOUTHERN / NORTHERN GUANACASTETo travel from the Central Valley to the province of Guanacaste is in itself experience. From slow winding roads to stretches of flat land where the green humid tropical forest is left behind and gives room to the dry tropical forest with the mountains outlining the horizon. The name Guana- caste comes from the word quahnacastlan, which is a tree from Guanacaste. The cultural inheri- tance comes from the first group of Indians that populated the area many years ago, the Chorotegas. Today many remains from these pre Columbian ancestors can be found. The climate in Guanacaste is sunny with a fresh dry breeze year round. The dry season allows prudent time for sunning and the rainy season brings with it the colorful flowering of the trees whose aromas enchant visitors. The international airport Daniel Oduber is located only a few minutes from Liberia, the capital city, and is the main reason why tourism in this region has grown due to the fact this airport receives many direct flights from the United States.Guanacaste is known for its cattle production and above all the irregularities of its coasts which generate a great diversity of beaches and coastal resources such as important attractions like wildlife refuges, scenic waterfalls, dry forests, marshlands, bird-watching, horseback riding, natio- nal parks with natural thermal waters, volcanoes, historic sites, and picturesque villages. All of the above is combined with luxurious beach resorts, golf courses, world class sport fishing and excellent facilities for special events.
